Shout Out Our Rivers

Join us in celebrating and raising awareness for freshwater environments

Every year on the fourth Sunday of September, millions of people across the globe come together to raise awareness, celebrate, and give rivers the recognition they deserve on World Rivers Day (28 September 2025). You could say it’s our version of Christmas.

Last year, river lovers from across Australia, and even as far away as Sudan and France, shouted out nearly 100 rivers. Together, those shoutouts reached hundreds of thousands of people, putting rivers in front of communities, decision makers, and everyday people.

This year we need your help to do it all again – louder, prouder, and with even more rivers in the spotlight!

Why Our Rivers Need A Shout Out?

More than ever, we need to bring attention to what we can do (big and small) to sustainably look after our waterways.

Every living thing on this planet needs water, and our changing climate is adding further pressure on our rivers, threatening our drinking water, crucial habitat for wildlife, and our wellbeing.

By shouting out your river, you are helping bring attention to all rivers across our country.

Whether it’s a small creek that’s been forgotten or a major river that crosses multiple states, each river contributes to the bigger picture.

How to Join In (It’s Simple)

All it takes is a photo of a river and sharing it how you would like. That’s it! No special camera, no complicated process, just a simple photo to celebrate the waterways we love in the lead-up to World Rivers Day on 28 September 2025.

👉 There are plenty of ways to share your river, so you can choose whatever works best for you:

  • Comment on our Facebook page
  • Post to social media using #ShoutOutOurRivers and tag us
  • Email it in: enquiries@arrc.com.au
  • Or submit through the form here

The photo does not have to be new, and you do not need to be in it. Just make sure you include the river’s name. Plus, if you would like, also tell us why this river is special to you.

Everyone has a role to play in protecting and restoring our rivers for generations to come. Subscribe to our monthly newsletter to learn how you can support our rivers beyond World Rivers Day.

There’s even a $100 gift card to be won

There is already plenty of satisfaction in helping raise awareness for our rivers — but why stop there? Every river shoutout you share also puts you in the running to win a $100 ARRC Shop voucher.

And the best part? You can share as many different river shoutouts as you like, which means more chances to win.

So what could that $100 get you?

  • A hoodie featuring native fish artwork that will have your mates asking where you got it.
  • A set of greeting cards so beautiful you might not even want to give them away.
  • A tote bag or mug covered in hand drawn designs of our unique wildlife.

Not bad for sharing a photo (or ten) of a river you already love.

So what are you waiting for?

Go on and get out there, join us and share your river this World Rivers Day. Let’s flood our feeds with rivers worth celebrating!

Why is this important?

Our rivers need our attention more than ever before. Water is essential for all life, and our changing climate is putting extra pressure on our rivers, affecting drinking water, wildlife habitats, and our overall wellbeing.

By highlighting your local river, you’ve helped raise awareness about all our waterways. Whether it’s a small, overlooked creek or a major river spanning several states and territories, every river plays a vital role – they preserve our environment, support life, and ensure a sustainable future. Thank you for coming together to celebrate and protect the beauty and importance of our rivers. We loved seeing all your contributions!
