The River Red Gum, also known by various traditional names such as Biyala, Yarraan, Itara, Binyal, and Yarra, is the most widely distributed eucalypt species in mainland Australia. Its can grow to as high as 30m, and is thought to live to ages as old as 500 or 1000 years.

The River Red Gum has very deep sinker roots, allowing them to tap into underground water supplies during times of drought.
