In the International Convention on Biological Diversity Strategic Plan the number one target is:
By 2020, at the latest, people are aware of the values of biodiversity and the steps they can take to conserve and use it sustainably.
To support this work the IUCN Commission on Education and Communication has suggested an approach to communicating biodiversity – “how to tell a love story” – which suggests we might do better to develop “the love” than to talk about “the loss” message of biodiversity.
There is a video explaining the approach “how to tell a love story” which focuses on ‘personalising‘, ‘humanising‘ and ‘publicising‘ nature and is aimed at conservationists/ environmentalists to stimulate a different way of educating and communicating…
“How to tell a love story” is a follow up from a video made for the Convention on Biological Diversity Nagoya meeting called “Love not Loss”- which pointed out that our doom messages may not be working…. instead, what does work is enabling people to feel awe and wonder about nature as this is what inspires them to take action.
